Partner, Executive Editor of the Chicago Police Torture Archive

Maira Khwaja is a writer, educator, multimedia producer, and human rights reporter, based at the Invisible Institute, a journalism organization on the South Side of Chicago that investigates police misconduct and government neglect. 

 

Her reporting on the connections between Chicago Police and U.S. Military served as the basis for the curation of Remaking the Exceptional: Tea, Torture, and Reparations (DePaul Art Museum, 2022), recognized by Hyperallergic as one of the top 50 art exhibits internationally in 2022.
 

For her work managing the Chicago Police Torture Archive, Maira was named a 2021 Leader for a New Chicago by the MacArthur Foundation and Field Foundation. She is the co-author of a forthcoming book about youth and police interactions for Haymarket Books.
