Rachel Leah Klein is a postdoctoral fellow in Carceral Studies and the Humanities at Brandeis University. Her research focuses on the mass incarceration of women in California and their anti-carceral activism during the 1980s and 1990s. She received her PhD in American Studies & Ethnicity from the University of Southern California. Since 2019, Rachel has also been a member of the prison abolitionist group, the California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP), and part of the editorial collective of the Coalition’s newsletter, The Fire Inside. At seventy-seven issues and counting, The Fire Inside is the longest-running women’s prison newsletter in the U.S. Rachel has helped produce the last twenty issues. She has also been teaching in prisons since 2017 in New York, California, Scotland, and Massachusetts.
