May 2026 marks the 30th year of incarceration for Juan Moreno Haines. For 15 years, Juan teamed up with other incarcerated journalists as managing editor and senior editor to produce the award-winning San Quentin News. In the fall of 2023, Solitary Watch named Juan its Editor-in-Chief -- one of the only newsrooms with a currently incarcerated person in a top leadership position. Juan is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and received its Silver Heart in 2017. He's been honored by the California News Publishers Association, Law and Justice in Journalism Project, PEN America, San Francisco Press Club, and Media for a Just Society. Juan's reporting appears in numerous publications, including, The Appeal, The Guardian, San Francisco Chronicle, and Los Angeles Times.
