At nineteen, Dominic was convicted and sentenced to a prison term of 25 years to life. Determined to transform his life, Dominic embraced the power of education and personal development while incarcerated. He immersed himself in numerous programs that cultivated his leadership, mentorship, empathy, compassion, and integrity. Throughout his incarceration, Dominic took on pivotal roles as director, coordinator, facilitator, educator, and mentor.
Domnic's dedication and positive impact did not go unnoticed; in December 2017, he was granted executive clemency by the Governor of New York State, who recognized his exceptional leadership and contributions within the prison system. After serving 20 years, 7 months, and 18 days, Dominic was released on January 22, 2018.
Since his release, he has dedicated himself to being a valuable resource and asset to his community. Dominic has shared his story and insights through platforms including The Tamron Hall Show, NPR, Red Table Talk, Vice HBO’s documentary Raised in the System. He inspires other with his mantra: “A setback is a setup for a comeback”.
Dominic holds an Associate’s degree in psychology from Ashworth College and is currently pursuing further studies at Columbia University on a full scholarship. He collaborates with schools throughout the New York City Department of Education, leveraging his personal experiences to promote growth, understanding, and positive transformation among young people. Furthermore, Dominic has delivered speeches at numerous correctional facilities nationwide, including Rikers Island, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C.
